Movies on your PC

Just finished watching "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" on my PC via Movielink.

If you are not familiar with the service, Movielink is the Movie industry's attempt to avert some of the problems that have hit the Music industry due to file-sharing programs like Kazzaa and Napster. For a fee you can download to your PC any of the movies they have in their library and then watch it at your leisure via your PC. Their main competition comes from three sources: DVD rental stores like Blockbuster, DVD mail order, and pay per view.

Movielink Vs. DVD Rental Stores -

Advantages:

- Selection: "Friends of Eddie Coyle", for example is not currently available on DVD.

- Selection: You can always view any movie they have at any time - no movie is ever "out".

- Cost: Not sure what most stores charge these days, but Movielink charges either $5 or $4 for new releases and $3 or $2 for older ones.

- Cost: Never any late fees

- Anonymity: Who wants to be seen bringing a copy of "Barbarella" or "10" up to the counter? Not me!

- Convenience: It was really cold and snow last night were I live. Who wants to leave the house in those conditions?

- Convenience: You can download movies from Movielink at any time of the day or year. Even if I could brave the weather last night, the stores were closed because it was Christmas.

Disadvantages:

Quality: Movies weren't designed to be played on the screen of a PC. I should have been watching it on my 51 inch TV with the Dolby DTS digital surround sound.

Selection: Even though "Friends of Eddie Coyle" is not on DVD, your average Blockbuster has a greater selection than Movielink does. (For now.)

Movielink vs. Home Delivery

Many people love Netflix but Movielink has some advantages over them -

Cost: Netflix has a $20/Month minimum, Movielink doesn't

Convenience: Netflix is not a good soluion for people who crave instant gratification. A person usually has to wait a few days before they get the selection they want. With
Movielink I only had to wait an hour or so.

Movielink vs. Pay Per View:

Movielink has a few advantages on Pay per View as well

Cost: Most Pay per View movies are around $8 or so.

Convenience: You can't pause, fast forward or rewind a Pay Per View movie. You can with Movielink. You can also watch a movie an unlimited number of times within the 24 hour rental period. You can only watch a Pay-Per-View movie once.
Selection: Movielink has a better selection than my satellite Pay-Per-View

Convenience: You can watch a Movielink movie at the time of your choosing. With Pay Per View you watch at their choosing - Spider Man at Nine PM, Lord of the Rings at 9:30 PM, etc.

NO-MAHHH!

Good little factoid from Gordon Edes' baseball column in yesterday's Boston Globe:

Nomar Garciaparra's 56 doubles are a major league record for shortstops
(previous record, Alex Rodriguez, 54 in 1996) and made him the first Sox
player to have two seasons with 50 or more doubles ...

- Gordon Edes, "Less dollars, more sense in new market". Boston Globe, December 22nd, 2002.

The major league record! Beating A-Rod's record!

There is only one thing that can be said about that:

NOM-AHHHHHH!

Dirty Water
The Standells

(spoken:)
I'm gonna tell you a story
I'm gonna tell you about my town
I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby
Aww, it's all about my town

Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles (aw, that's what's happenin' baby)
That's where you'll find me
Along with lovers, fuggers, and thieves (aw, but they're cool people)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, you're the Number One place)
Frustrated women (I mean they're frustrated)
Have to be in by twelve o'clock (oh, that's a shame)
But I'm wishin' and a-hopin, oh
That just once those doors weren't locked (I like to save time for
my baby to walk around)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Because I love that dirty water
Oh, oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Well, I love that dirty water (I love it, baby)
I love that dirty water (I love Baw-stun)
I love that dirty water (Have you heard about the Strangler?)
I love that dirty water (I'm the man, I'm the man)
I love that dirty water (Owww!)
I love that dirty water (Come on, come on) [fade]

You may have heard of a Dirty Water Dog - this is a Dirty Water Blog!!!
